A raft of practical tools to help doctors, nurses and practice managers make more effective use of their time. The Working in Partnership Programme was set up to give general practice access to effective strategies and practical tools that help create capacity and increase the effectiveness of each consultation. The programme consists of 13 initiatives that help develop and integrate the general practice workforce, implement new ways of working to make more effective use of clinicians’ time and help develop the public’s capacity to self care and to manage minor illness. |

Introducing the team
Left to right: Janet Bell, Sue Cross, Anna Lynall, Sarah Wrixon, Louise Jarvis, Helena Stone, Paul Vaughan, Janine Zdziebczok WiPP is privileged to be working with an extended family of professionals. In just two years WiPP has designed, developed, tested and delivered a range of valuable tools, working in collaboration with over 100 NHS and lay organisations. Initiative of the monthWorkload Analysis ToolBuilding capacity in general practice and managing workload – there is a way! WiPP is developing a workload analysis tool to help GPs and surgeries match the skills of their healthcare teams more closely to the medical needs of their patients. The tool analyses practice workload data to help practices and other primary care organisations identify and understand the different, high impact elements of their workload. This will enable practices in particular to identify areas for potential change. Good Practice case study of the monthA nurse practitioner triage and treatment service for patients seeking same-day appointments. A total of 260 GP appointments each month have been released by introducing a nurse practitioner triage and treatment service, leading to a reduction of up to 62% in patients seeing the GP for a same-day appointment. Health Care Assistant, General Practice Nursing and Self Care ResourcesThe Health Care Assistant, General Practice Nursing and Self Care resources have launched, with over 25,000 downloads in November alone.
Sue Cross, Project Lead, General Practice Nursing Initiative speaking at the Inspiring Primary Care Road Show Self Care: The Reality – Free workshopsFollowing on from Turning Rhetoric into Reality, which launched the WiPP self care resources, WiPP is running a short series of free workshops in January and February. These will provide organisations with the practical skills to use and implement the self care resources. These are all available from the website. The workshops take place in Taunton, London, Birmingham and Leeds. Please register for your free place at www.pcc.nhs.uk/events. Nearly a third of GPs aware of WiPP says Doctors.NetAccording to research recently undertaken by Doctors.Net on behalf of WiPP nearly a third of GPs are now aware of the programme and of those over 70% intend to use the WiPP resources. Programme Lead, Louise Jarvis, says this is good news, “WiPP began mainstreaming its resources in the early summer so it’s very encouraging to see that there is relatively high awareness after only a few months. We’re aiming high though and would like to see this translated to 100% awareness by this time next year and everyone reading this can help us achieve that! We’ll be reporting back regularly.” WiPP goes Beyond the BoundaryThe WiPP initiatives are not part of a bureaucratic, drawn out programme but have been designed, developed, tested and delivered where they matter - into General Practice, said Chris Town, chair of the WiPP Advisory Group at Beyond the Boundary, WiPP’s showcase event held at Lord’s on 30 November 2006.
