General Practice Nursing - Getting it Right for Patients and Public Health

Sue Cross

Project Manager: Sue Cross

"WiPP's General Practice Nursing (GPN) Initiative set out to develop a range of core principles to support the general practice nurse. We had a specific remit to improve standards across England and diminish anomalies in roles, skills and remuneration in general practice nursing. After two years in development, working closely with five pilot sites, the GPN Toolkit is already driving significant change and is actively helping general practice nurses, general practice employers, PCTs, education providers and patients.

We launched the GPNEF (General Practice Nursing Education Forum), which held its first Summit in September 07, where  Chief Nursing Officer of England, Chris Beasley, spoke about the issues currently facing general practice nurses. Subsequently WiPP invited educators, policy makers and practitioners to attend a second Strategy Summit in March 2008 to identify concrete ways of standardising professional development support for general practice nurses.

The GPN recourses will be permanently housed at the Royal College of Nursing from the end of July 2008. www.rcn.org.uk.
